Christmas Baymax Amigurumi

Skill Level: Beginner. You will crochet the body and head as a single piece the same as crocheting a snowman by working in the rounds. For this, just use the single crochet, increase and decrease with slip stitch, and chain stitch for help. The tutor uses an almost invisible decrease, where the front loops of two stitches are worked together. The final body piece is closed by weaving a tail through the remaining front loops. You will also be working with the fuzzy yarn for the border.

You will also crochet the legs and arms separately. The scarf is separately worked in a rectangle using the taller Half Double Crochet (HDC) stitch. Finally, the iconic eye line is created using simple Embroidery with black yarn. To crochet an intermediate Santa hat, you will be working in the rounds to crochet the conical shape.

Tutorial Timing: Just about 24 minutes for the doll and scarf, and 13 minutes for the hat (perfect for learning the popular snowman amigurumi base that can be used for crocheting not just snowmen, but the snowman animals like reindeer and cat also. Plus, learn crocheting a basic scarf, working in the back-and-forth rows, and how to produce a slouch in a hat using sewing. So, the tutorial is worth watching!)

Pattern Type: A detailed on-screen written pattern is available if you find written instructions easy to follow along with. The pattern is written in US and Spanish terms.

Personalization Tips: As the tutor says, you can crochet the standard white Baymax hero and a festive Christmas version using a single pattern since the accessories a removable. For the traditional Baymax look, a small red button heart can be added to the chest. For a better turn of the amigurumi, you should crochet a long scarf.

Or, the finished look can be softened by applying pink blush, eyeshadow, or paint to the cheeks and using the plush yarn. Changing the yarn and hook size (3 mm recommended) will alter the final size of the 10 cm.

The Materials Needed

Collect the following tools and materials in the stash for crocheting this Christmas Baymax, as mentioned and suggested in the tutorial:

  1. Cotton yarn in white, red, and black. You can use the Milk Cotton Yarn which is a blend of cotton and milk protein.
  2. 3mm crochet hook. So, I think the tutor may have used DK yarn.
  3. 2 – 8mm safety eyes.
  4. Sewing needle.
  5. Black yarn for embroidery.
  6. Amigurumi stuffing. Use the polyester fiberfill.
  7. Heart button (optional).

Stitches Required

The following are the crochet techniques that the tutor will use for crocheting all of this creative Christmas amigurumi:

  1. Chain Stitch (CH): Used for the foundation of the scarf and to add height at the beginning of rounds.
  2. (Single Crochet – SC): The core stitch used for the body and limbs, creating a dense texture for stuffing.
  3. (Increase): Work two single crochet stitches into a single stitch to expand the circumference of the piece.
  4. (Invisible Decrease): Reduce stitches by inserting the hook into the front loop of the next two stitches and completing a single crochet, minimizing the resulting hole.
  5. (Slip Stitch – SL ST): Used to join rounds or to finish off a piece by pulling the yarn through the stitch and the loop on the hook.
  6. (Half Double Crochet – HDC): Used for the scarf, created by yarning over, inserting the hook, yarning over, and pulling through all three loops on the hook.
