If you are not making it for graduation, skip the hat to have a cute amigurumi toy.  Using five-ply cotton yarn and a 3.5mm hook, the duckling is sturdy enough to stand on its own or be used as a decorative centerpiece.

General Making: 

Crochet a yellow head, increasing to 36 stitches, and create puffy cheeks in Row 10 by working three stitches into single points. Make a pear-shaped body and attach orange triangles for the beak and feet. Finish by adding a black mortarboard with a yellow tassel between the eyes.
