Crochet Christmas Stockings Tutorial
Quick Summary & Skill Level: Beginner. Each stocking pattern is worked in the rounds from bottom to top for an open top of the stocking using color changes in bulk. The crochet toe pattern also uses half-double crochet and double crochet together, along with single crochet as the primary stitch. For the stripe pattern, change the color after every row.
The solid stocking pattern is not worked by keeping two yarn strands together in hold since there is no need for it except toe and bottom. As for helping stitches, use the chain stitch and slip stitch for starting a new round and joining the rounds.
Quick Tips: The tutor shows two combos for the striped stocking and three for the solid stocking. These are from bottom up: red, white, and green, red and white, red, brown, and green, green, white, and red & finally, white, red, and green.
Always choose no more than three colors, whether you select the striped or solid version. As the tutorial shows, you can also add tiny snowflake or gingerbread house appliques onto it. You can also fill in the stuffing to use it as a pincushion.
For Special Stitches
To understand a bit advanced stitches used in the stocking pattern, follow through with these crochet guides:
- Single Crochet Increase (sc inc): Work two single crochet stitches into the same stitch to increase the width.
- Half Double Crochet (hdc): Yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull up a loop (three loops on hook), yarn over, pull through all three loops.
- Double Crochet (dc): Yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull up a loop (three loops on hook), yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through the remaining two loops.
- Double Crochet Two Together (dc2tog): Work a partial double crochet in the first stitch, work a partial double crochet in the next stitch, then yarn over and pull through all loops on the hook; used to decrease.
