About the designer: the designer behind this pumpkin project is @lisa_crochet – most of her tutorials are about using the yarn scraps to crochet practical and popular projects, including keychains shaped like sunflowers, four-leaf clovers, butterflies, and much more. In addition to these small accessories, she also has tutorials for making classic granny squares and simple amigurumi like bunnies and a frog. However, she mostly focuses on crochet motifs and flatwork. But I will call her an all-rounder! She also has a whole collection of pumpkin projects that is worth checking!
Note: In respect of the creator’s pattern rights, there will be no provision of the written pattern. You can watch the tutorial with on-screen instructions at the end of this post.
Crochet Basic Pumpkin Tutorial
Skill Level: Beginner – Intermediate. Starting with the magic ring, you will start with the usual crochet rounds using the double crochet, chain, slip stitch, and increase. After crocheting the inner circle of pumpkin shape, you will crochet the edging using the chain, chain skipping, half-double crochet, single crochet, and double crochet to get a nice, smooth wave. For the stem, changing the color to green, you will use the attachment-stitching and crochet the shape using decrease and single crochet rows.
Tutorial Timing: 12 minutes only (worth watching as you will learn an elegant edging technique that can also be used for the book sleeves, dishcloths, and more decor projects. If you already know how to crochet a round, only a few minutes are needed. Like any flat pattern, this pumpkin tutorial is perfect for practicing the basic crochet stitches.)
Personalization Tips: The tutor uses a light orange shade for the main coaster, but you can also use other autumn shades like yellow (to see how it looks, check the yellow pumpkin hairclip), striped pattern using white and orange, or dark orange. Play with yarn thickness to make larger or smaller coasters. This pattern missed a leaf, so you can use the brown for the stem and use green to sew a tiny crochet leaf, and also a pumpkin vine. You can also use the Jack-o-Lantern felt face!
Pattern Type: A detailed on-screen written pattern is available if you find written instructions easy to follow along with.

- 4-ply milk cotton yarn (orange and green)
- 2.5mm crochet hook (4/0)
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
Techniques Needed
Learn the following crochet techniques and stitches in the pumpkin pattern with the quick guides:
- Magic Ring: Loop yarn, crochet into the circle, and pull tight for a neat starting point.
- Double Crochet (DC): Yarn over, insert hook, pull through, yarn over, and complete the stitch in two steps.
- Increase (INC): Work two DC stitches into the same stitch to expand rows.
- Single Crochet (SC): Insert the hook, yarn over, pull through, yarn over again, and finish the stitch.
- Slip Stitch (SL ST): Insert hook, yarn over, and pull through all loops for a seamless join.
- Decrease (DEC): Combine two stitches into one by pulling yarn through two consecutive loops.
How is it done?
Start the pumpkin coaster with a magic ring and work 12 double crochets into it. Progressively increase the size of the circle by following the pattern for rows of increases, completing five rows in total. Add the ridge effect using a mix of double crochets, slip stitches, and chains. For the stem, crochet a small rectangular section using single crochet and decreases, then attach it to the pumpkin. Finish by weaving in the ends, and your festive pumpkin coaster is complete!
