Crochet Buddy Alien Plushie Tutorial
Quick Summary & Skill Level: Intermediate. You will crochet this alien plushie in many parts. Stitches like single crochet, increase, and decrease. A specific shaping technique used for the body is crocheting into the Front Loop Only (FLO) for the edge between the head and body.
The limbs (legs and hands) and antenna are also simple with a flat seam using single crochet or a final closing method using the tapestry needle.
Ears need Chain stitch, Half Double Crochet (HDC), and Double Crochet (DC), worked in rows directly onto the finished head, and the optional scarf is crocheted using Triple Crochet (TR) worked in rows.
Tips before getting started: The tutor shows two variations: differing in the main color of the plushie, as the pattern suggests using “any color you want” – the purple and orange & parrot and dark pink.
For a standing pose, you can place the legs in different places. The small Embroidered Smile can also be adjusted, or the mouth can be omitted entirely, to alter the expression.
Main Techniques
Here’s a list of quick guides to each crochet stitch for these crochet alien plushies:
- Crocheting in Front Loop Only (FLO) – Insert the hook into the front loop only (the one closest to you) to create a defined edge or ridge.
- Slip Stitch – Insert the hook, yarn over, and pull through both the stitch and the loop on your hook to join or finish a round.
- Half Double Crochet (HDC) – Yarn over, insert the hook into the stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over again, and pull through all three loops on the hook.
- Double Crochet (DC) – Yarn over, insert the hook, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over again, and pull through the remaining two loops.
- Triple/Treble Crochet (TR) – Yarn over twice, insert the hook, yarn over, pull up a loop, then yarn over and pull through two loops at a time until one loop remains on the hook.
