Free Crochet Ruffle Brim Sun Hat Pattern For Summer

Ruffled-brim hats are undoubtedly the most elegant crochet hats. Today, I will share a free crochet pattern for crocheting this solid sun hat for girls with an attached lace ribbon. It is perfect for both kids and adults. It is crocheted by working in rounds from top down to the bottom using just one color of yarn. Pink, red, aqua, and green will work fine. Macrame yarn makes it super elegant.

There will also be a video tutorial for crocheting this ruffled hat. I will share both UK and US patterns for crocheting this hat. Starting with the magic ring.

Pattern Instructions

Crown & Body

The hat is worked in a continuous spiral. Use a scrap of yarn to mark the end of each round.

  1. Rnd 1: MR, ch 1, 1 sc, 8 hdc into the ring. (Total 9 sts). Pull tight.
  2. Rnd 2: 2 hdc in each st around. (18 sts).
  3. Rnd 3: [1 hdc, inc] repeat around. (27 sts).

  1. Rnd 4: [2 hdc, inc] repeat around. (36 sts).
  2. Rnd 5: [3 hdc, inc] repeat around. (45 sts).

  1. Rnd 6+: Continue increasing (4 hdc, inc; then 5 hdc, inc, etc.) until the flat circle reaches the required diameter for your size.
  2. Size Adjustment: For the 46cm size, ensure you reach 92 total sts. If short, add specific increases in the next round to hit the count.
  3. Body: Work 1 hdc in each st around (no increases) until the hat reaches the top of the ears.

Ruffle Brim

  1. Brim Rnd 1: [1 hdc, inc] repeat around.
  2. Brim Rnd 2: 1 hdc in each st around (no increases).
  3. Brim Rnd 3: [2 hdc, inc] repeat around.

  1. Brim Rnd 4–5: 1 hdc in each st around (no increases).
  2. Brim Rnd 6: [3 hdc, inc] repeat around.
  3. Brim Rnd 7–9: 1 hdc in each st around (no increases).
  4. Final Round: 1 sc in the last st, skip 1 st, sl st into the next st. Fasten off.

Assembly & Finishing

  1. Fastening Off: After the final sl st, pull the yarn through to the back using the hook to create a seamless edge. Weave in all loose ends securely.
  2. Ribbon Placement: Take the 1.5mm ribbon and thread it through the stitches at the base of the hat body (just above where the brim starts). Weave it in and out of the hdc stitches around the entire circumference.
  3. Decorative Bow: Use the 4.5cm wider ribbon to create a separate bow. Attach this bow to the side of the hat, specifically over the area where the thinner ribbon ends meet.
  4. Securing: Tie the thin ribbon into a small knot or bow under the decorative large bow to hold the hat’s tension, allowing for slight size adjustments.
