About the Designer: The designer behind this fall fox wallet project is @PlayHookywithMe – her crochet tutorials cover a wide range of topics, from tutorials on specific stitches and techniques (like the Open Moss Stitch and seamless joins) to full project guides for blankets and amigurumi. Her channel also offers tips on improving crochet skills, such as fixing tension and choosing colors. You can find a variety of playlists, including tutorials on corner-to-corner (C2C) crochet, hearts, and rock and crystal covers.

Note: In respect for the creator’s pattern rights, there will be no provision of the written pattern. You can watch the tutorial with on-screen written instructions at the end of this post.

Crochet Fox Wallet Tutorial Features

Skill Level: Intermediate. The crochet wallet starts with a magic circle. The primary stitches used are single crochet, chain stitches, and slip stitch to join rounds. The video also demonstrates how to change yarn colors and uses a seamless join technique to finish the pieces neatly. The final assembly involves sewing the crocheted pieces together and adding a button and loop for closure.

Tutorial Timing: Approximately 26 minutes only (perfect for learning the basics of crocheting a wallet, including button attachment and more)

Personalization Tips: Choose from brown and pink colors as presented by the tutor. You can also attach the safety eyes instead of crocheted eyes. You can change the size of the holder to better fit your hooks. The creator chose not to cover the entire hook because different people have different hook sizes. You can simply add more stitches to your rows if you want to completely cover your hook. The video mentions that you could add a button to the pocket if you want.

The creator explains that they sandwiched two pieces together for the ears to make them stiff and solid for durability, but you could just do the fox color if you prefer a more flexible design.

Pattern Type: An on-screen written pattern is available if you find written instructions easy to follow along with.

Supplies Used

  • Yarn: Stylecraft’s Special DK yarn. The color used for the fox is called “tomato,” and a cream color is also used for the base. Pink and black yarn are also used for the cheeks and eyes. The equivalent in the US is a sport-weight yarn.
  • Hook: A 3.75 mm crochet hook is used, although the suggested size for the yarn is a 4 mm hook.
  • Needle: A tapestry or darning needle is needed for sewing on the pieces and weaving in ends.
  • Button: A button is used to secure the holder closed.
  • Scissors: A pair of scissors is needed for cutting the yarn.
  • Stitch Markers: The creator mentions that stitch markers can be helpful to keep your place.

Techniques Used

The following are the crochet techniques that the tutor uses for crocheting this wallet:

  • Magic circle: Wrap yarn around fingers, pull a loop through, and crochet stitches into the adjustable ring.

  • Single crochet (sc): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through, yarn over again, and pull through both loops.

  • Chain stitch (ch): Yarn over and pull through the loop on your hook to create a chain.

  • Slip stitch (sl st): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, and pull through both the stitch and loop on hook in one motion.

  • Join rounds with slip stitch: Slip stitch into the first stitch of the round to connect the ends neatly.

  • Change yarn colors: Complete the last yarn-over of the previous stitch with the new color before continuing.

  • Seamless join: Fasten off, weave tail through both loops of the first stitch, then down into the back loop of the last stitch for an invisible finish.

  • Sew pieces together: Use a yarn needle and whipstitch or mattress stitch to join crocheted sections.

  • Attach button and loop closure: Sew the button securely to one side, crochet a chain loop on the opposite side, and secure it.
