Crochet Heart Puff Bag Pattern For Beginners

Centered around a beautiful heart puff stitch, this pattern shows how to make a soft and stylish crochet handbag for daily use. The bag starts from a magic ring and grows with repeating heart shapes made using puff stitches. After building the base, the sides are shaped with even rounds. Strong handles are formed by reducing stitches, and the bag is finished with a button closure and a simple decorative label.

Material List

  • Yarn: 2 balls of Fabric Yarn (Cotton-blend “Somi” or similar).

  • Hook: 6.0mm or 7.0mm Crochet Hook (depending on yarn thickness).

  • Accessories: 1 Large Wooden Button (approx. 25-30mm), Decorative Label (optional).

  • Tools: Tapestry needle (large eye), Scissors, 2-4 Stitch markers.

Abbreviation List

  • MR: Magic Ring

  • Ch: Chain

  • Sl St: Slip Stitch

  • St(s): Stitch(es)

  • HPS (Heart Puff Stitch): [Yarn over, insert hook into space, pull up a 1cm loop] x 3 or 4 times. Yarn over and pull through all loops on hook. Ch 1. Repeat puff once more in the same space.

  • Half-HPS: A single Puff stitch (used for strap edges).

  • DC: Double Crochet

  • Inc: Increase (Work two HPS into a single Ch-1 space from the row below).

I. The Circular Base

Note: Every round ends with a Sl St into the Ch-1 space of the very first HPS of that round.

  • Round 1: In a MR, work 4 HPS. (4 hearts total).

  • Round 2: Work Inc in every Ch-1 space around. (8 hearts total).

  • Round 3: [1 HPS, Inc] repeat 4 times. (12 hearts total).

  • Round 4: [1 HPS, 1 HPS, Inc] repeat 4 times. (16 hearts total).

  • Round 5: [1 HPS, Inc, 1 HPS, 1 HPS, 1 HPS] repeat 4 times. (20 hearts total).

  • Round 6: [1 HPS in each of the next 4 sts, Inc] repeat 4 times. (24 hearts total).

II. The Bag Body

Note: In these rounds, you no longer increase. Simply work one heart on top of every heart from the previous round.

  • Rounds 7–14: 1 HPS in each Ch-1 space around. (24 hearts per round).

  • Round 15 (The Closure Loop):

    1. Work 21 HPS as normal.

    2. After the 21st heart, Ch 15.

    3. Sl St back into the base of the chain to form a loop.

    4. Finish the round with the remaining 3 HPS. Sl st to join.

III. The Straps (Work Two Separately)

The straps are worked in rows back and forth over a section of 6 heart spaces.

Side 1:

  • Row 1:

    • Sl St into the first HPS space. Pull up a 1cm loop.

    • Work a Half-HPS (one puff).

    • Work 4 HPS (full hearts) in the next 4 spaces.

    • Work a Half-HPS in the 6th space.

  • Row 2:

    • Ch 3, turn.

    • Work a Half-HPS in the first space.

    • Work 2 HPS in the center spaces.

    • Work a Half-HPS and 1 DC in the last space.

  • Rows 3–11: Repeat Row 2 until the strap reaches 11 rows in height. Fasten off with a long tail.

Side 2:

  • Count 6 heart spaces away from the edge of the first strap (this creates the armhole gap).

  • Attach yarn in the 7th space and repeat Rows 1–11 as done for Side 1.

IV. Final Assembly

  1. Connecting Straps: Lay the two strap ends together. Using your tapestry needle and the long yarn tail, use a Whip Stitch (감침질) to sew the two ends together. Ensure the seam is on the inside.

  2. Button Placement: Center the wooden button on the front of the bag, approximately 2-3 rounds down from the top edge. Align it so the Ch-15 loop from Round 15 can stretch over it comfortably.

  3. Finishing: Weave in all remaining tails inside the bag. If you have a leather or wooden “Handmade” label, sew it to the bottom corner for a professional touch.
