Tutorial to Crochet the Plush Heart Plushie
This crochet project is an interactive Tug and Pull Love Nugget plush fidget toy shaped like a heart with arms and legs that slide back and forth through the body.
You start by making the connected arms and legs using a longtail foundation chain, then crochet the heart body from the bottom up while incorporating the limbs as you go.
Inside, felt pieces or a nylon pouch prevent the fiberfill stuffing from popping out when the limbs are pulled. Finally, you stuff the heart, shape the two top humps, add safety eyes, and embroider a cute little smile.
Skill Level
The project uses basic amigurumi stitches, but placing the limbs, making a foundation chain, and splitting the heart into two top humps require careful stitch counting.
Using different-colored stitch markers makes working into the central chains manageable even for beginners.
Abbreviations Used
sc: Single crochet
inc: Increase (two single crochets in the same stitch)
dec: Decrease / Invisible decrease (joining two stitches into one)
ch: Chain stitch
MR: Magic ring (magic circle)
FLO: Front loop only
BLO: Back loop only
mm: Millimeter
Materials Needed
- Plush Yarn: Bernat Blanket yarn (sturdy chenille/plush yarn is strongly recommended so it does not shed or break when arms and legs are pulled).
- Yarn Colors: Main color for the heart body and hands/feet, plus an accent color for the arms and legs (or a single color throughout, using about 3 yards of extra tail yarn for the limbs).
- Embroidering Yarn: A small piece of black worsted weight yarn for the smile.
- Crochet Hook: 6.0 mm crochet hook (or size matching your yarn weight and tension).
- Safety Eyes: 25 mm safety eyes with plastic backings.
- Stitch Markers:
- 1 main marker to track the start of each round.
- 8 additional markers (4 of one color, 4 of another color) to tag chain loops when separating the top heart humps.
- Stuffing: Polyester fiberfill stuffing.
- Stuffing Enclosure:
- 2 felt pieces (approx. 1″ × 1.5″) glued inside over the arm/leg holes using a hot glue gun, OR a section of nylon pantyhose tied at the ends to keep stuffing from leaking out when playing.
Tools & Notions:
- Scissors for cutting yarn.
- Yarn needle (tapestry needle) for cinching loops closed, weaving ends, and embroidering features.
- Toothpick and hot glue (optional) for shaping and securing the embroidered mouth curve.
