Part 1: Watermelon Main Body

Note: The project is worked from the bottom green rind upward to the pointed red top. Each round finishes with a slip stitch to join to the first stitch.

Green Rind Section

  • Round 1 (Foundation Chain): Start with a slip knot using Green yarn. Work 13 ch. (13 sts)

  • Round 2: Turn to work along the foundation chain, starting in the 2nd ch from the hook. Pierce into the back bumps (ridges) of the chain:

    • Work 11 sc down the chain.

    • In the final chain stitch, work 3 sc to round the corner.

    • Pivot the piece to work along the opposite side of the foundation chain: work 10 sc down the side.

    • In the very last stitch space, work 1 inc.

    • Sl st to the first sc to join. (26 sts)

  • Round 3: Ch 1, 1 inc, 10 sc, 3 inc, 10 sc, 2 inc. Sl st to join. (32 sts)

  • Round 4 (Shape the Base Rim): Ch 1, working in BLO (Back Loops Only) for the entire round, work 32 sc around. Sl st to join. (32 sts)

  • Round 5: Ch 1, work 32 sc around.

Yarn Color Change: On the 32nd (final) stitch of Round 5, insert hook and pull up a loop in green (2 loops on hook). Drop the green yarn, pick up the White yarn, and draw it through both loops to complete the stitch. Sl st to join the round.

White Pith Section

  • Round 6: Ch 1. We will work a repeating symmetry pattern across this round.

    • [1 sc, 1 dec, 10 sc, 1 dec, 1 sc] × 2. Sl st to join. (28 sts)

  • Round 7: Ch 1, work 28 sc around.

Yarn Color Change: On the 28th (final) stitch of Round 7, complete the final pull-through using the Red yarn. Sl st to join the round. Cut the green and white yarn tails, leaving a short bit inside to secure.

Red Flesh Section

  • Round 8: Ch 1. [1 sc, 1 dec, 8 sc, 1 dec, 1 sc] × 2. Sl st to join. (24 sts)

  • Round 9: Ch 1, work 24 sc around. Sl st to join. (24 sts)

  • Round 10: Ch 1. [1 sc, 1 dec, 6 sc, 1 dec, 1 sc] × 2. Sl st to join. (20 sts)

  • Round 11: Ch 1, work 20 sc around. Sl st to join. (20 sts)

  • Round 12: Ch 1. [1 sc, 1 dec, 4 sc, 1 dec, 1 sc] × 2. Sl st to join. (16 sts)

  • Round 13: Ch 1, work 16 sc around. Sl st to join. (16 sts)

Stuffing Tip: Stop here briefly to add fiberfill stuffing into the base of the watermelon. Pack it evenly so the wedge retains a plump, stable shape.

  • Round 14: Ch 1. [1 sc, 1 dec, 2 sc, 1 dec, 1 sc] × 2. Sl st to join. (12 sts)

  • Round 15: Ch 1, work 12 sc around. Sl st to join. (12 sts)

  • Round 16: Ch 1. [1 dec, 2 sc, 1 dec] × 2. Sl st to join. (8 sts)

  • Round 17: Ch 1, work 8 sc around. Sl st to join. (8 sts)

  • Fully top off the stuffing through the small top gap. Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail. Use your tapestry needle to weave the thread through the front loops of the final 8 stitches, pull tight to close the point completely, hide the yarn end inside the body, and trim.

Part 2: Seeds & Keychain Assembly

  1. Embroidering Seeds: Thread a length of Black yarn onto your tapestry needle. Knot one end and pull it through the base into the red section.

  2. Sew small, vertical “V” shapes or straight single-stitch lines scattered across the red flesh sections on both sides of the watermelon wedge to resemble seeds. Lock your yarn securely inside the stuffing when finished.

  3. Keychain Attachment: Loop your keychain strap or metal jump ring directly through the closed top point of the red watermelon slice, or attach a decorative bell or strap to turn it into a cute summer accessory!
