Free Crochet Susuwatari Flower Bag Charm Pattern

This project is an adorable, beginner-friendly crochet bag charm shaped like a Susuwatari (a soot sprite from Studio Ghibli movies).

The soot sprite sits in the center of a beautiful blooming flower, making it a very colorful accessory. It features a built-in long chain loop so you can easily tie it to your purse, tote bag, or keys.

The design involves crocheting two flat circular base pieces, adding flower petals around the edges, creating tiny dangling legs, and sewing it all together to hide the messy ends inside.

Materials Needed

  • Black yarn (for the soot sprite body and legs)

  • Purple yarn (or any color of your choice for the flower petals)

  • White yarn (for the eyes)

  • Crochet hook suitable for your yarn thickness

  • Yarn needle (for sewing pieces together and hiding ends)

  • Scissors

  • Hot glue (optional, if you prefer gluing the eyes instead of sewing)

  • Small black beads, safety eyes, or black yarn (for the eye pupils)

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • MR = Magic Ring

  • ch = Chain stitch

  • sl st = Slip stitch

  • sc = Single crochet

Full Crochet Pattern

Body (Make 2 – Front and Back pieces)

  • Start with your Black yarn.

  • Round 1: Create a Magic Ring, ch 3. Work 14 dc into the MR. Pull the ring tight and sl st into the first stitch to join. (14 sts)

  • Round 2: ch 3. Work a dc inc in every stitch around. Sl st into the first stitch to join. (28 sts)

  • For the Front Piece only: After finishing Round 2, do not cut the yarn yet. Chain 40 to create the bag loop. Sl st into the back of the piece to secure the loop. FO and cut the yarn, leaving a very long tail for sewing the halves together later.

  • For the Back Piece: FO after Round 2 and weave in the ends. (Do not make the chain 40 loop on this piece).

Flower Petals

  • Attach your Purple yarn to the edge of the front piece.

  • Step 1: ch 4.

  • Step 2: Skip the base stitch where your chain comes from. In the next 3 stitches, work a dc inc (2 dc in each of the 3 stitches).

  • Step 3: ch 4, and sl st into the very next stitch on the circle.

  • Step 4: Repeat Steps 1-3 all the way around the circle to create the blooming flower petals.

  • FO and weave in the purple yarn ends securely.

  • Repeat the entire petal process around the edge of the Back Piece as well.

Legs (Make 2)

  • Using Black yarn, leave a long starting tail (about 30 cm or 12 inches) before making your slip knot.

  • Create a Magic Ring, work 6 sc into the ring. Pull tight and sl st to join. (6 sts)

  • Hold your working yarn and the long starting tail together so you are crocheting double-stranded.

  • Using both strands at the same time, chain 15.

  • FO and cut the yarn.

Eyes (Make 2)

  • With White yarn, create a Magic Ring.

  • ch 1, work 8 hdc into the MR.

  • Pull tight and sl st to join. (8 sts)

  • FO and leave a tail if you plan to sew the eyes onto the body.

Assembly

  • Attach the two legs to the bottom center of the front body piece by pulling the yarn tails through the stitches and tying them securely on the back side of the face.

  • Sew or use hot glue to attach the white eyes to the center of the front piece.

  • Add small black beads, or use black yarn, to create the tiny pupils in the center of the white eyes.

  • Place the front piece and back piece wrong sides together (the messy backs facing each other).

  • Using the long black tail left on the front piece, sew the two circular body halves together around the edges. This hides the leg knots and the back of the eyes cleanly inside the charm.

  • FO, hide all remaining yarn tails inside the project, and your cute bag charm is ready to use!
